Splinter Cell Conviction Delayed Again

It seems that within the past few years, delays have just become a part of the routine in the video game industry. The latest example came today, as Ubisoft announced today that Splinter Cell: Conviction is receiving another delay.

This new delay isn’t all that bad. The game has only been delayed from February 23rd to sometime in April. That’s not nearly as bad as what delay the game has already been through.

Conviction was originally announced back on May 23rd, 2007. It was supposed to have been scheduled for a November 16th, 2007 release. Since then, the game has been through a complete overhaul in gameplay and storyline. Originally, the game depicted a long-haired, bearded Sam Fisher. After the game missed its initial release date without warning, Xbox World 360 magazine reported on May 19th, 2008 that the game had been taken ”back to the drawing board.” Ubisoft then announced that the game was officially being delayed to the 2009-2010 fiscal year (which ends March 31st, 2010.)

The version of the game that we will see this April was first shown to the public at last year’s E3. The developers revealed that this new version of Conviction had been in development since early 2008. The trailer shown revealed that Sam’s appearance went through a complete change, and the storyline from the trailer was entirely different than what we had been led to believe it used to be.

No reason has ever been given for any of the delays that Conviction has received, including this latest one. We can only hope that after being in development for three years (or two depending on how you look at it,) that these delays are just to give the developers more time to make the game as perfect as possible. I’m hopeing for a strong Game of the Year nominee after all of the anticipation.
